GEORGIAN MEMORIES
This painting was inspired by a photo taken by my husband Bob a few years ago. It reminds me of the several canoe and kayaking trips we have taken over the years along the Georgian Bay side of the Bruce Saugeen Penninsula. One inspiring adventure after another , one new perspective of the escarpment face always led to yet another one to enjoy.
Painting this scene brought back memories of hiking, backpacking, canoe tripping and more. Rather joyful to recall those trips as I age.I have a number of favourite paintings but this one ranks close to the top. Using a format I learned from Carey Carick, I began in the top third. Mapping out the shape of the prominent pillar gave me a sense of what would go where. Painting the backdrop for this highlight of the painting reminds me of the sentinel guardians of the chief or king.
In my perspective. the significance of the pillar is only as attractive as its surroundings. The same pillar in a grassy field would not hold the same majesty. Only as it is part of a greater whole does its beauty and strength and even resilience stand out.
It reminds me that the elements of this painting are not in competition. They all contribute in their own way to create the beauty of the whole. How can we bring this concept to our own lives, our own relationships, our own workplaces
This can resonate with life itself? You may see different metaphors in this painting. We all have our unique views. As the artist, I love what I feel as I sense the wholeness of this picture. Creating the perspective of distance and depth intrigues me. it actually gives me control over the content. it means I could change things to transform it into something with greater meaning, with even a subtle line, or point or tone. Yet what is there, is there.
DISAPPEARING STREAM
This painting is intriguing as the flow of water disappears all together once the spring runoff is complete. I have been back to the same spot a few months later and it is difficult to determine where the different segments of flow actually occurred. It was dry!
The challenge in the painting of this scene is to be able to capture the direction of flow and the perspective of depth. I was able to achieve this by using contrast between light and dark as well al making the closer objects more clear and detailed. I have found that using a pallet knife helps give character to the rocks
As I was painting, I felt power in the fact that my hand and the painting tools I used could change the landscape. I became creator in a different sense than mimicking the Greatest Power that created the forces of nature in the first place. Yet if I had wanted, I could have made the current stronger or weaker, grander or trickling, higher or lower. But what would be perfect was, in fact, how it was meant to be in the moment.

A Guiding Light
Inspired by the power of Lake Huron’s waves and the shifting beauty of its sunsets, this painting explores the relationship between strength, light, and the quiet guidance we find in unexpected places…
Painting this was an exciting experience as I worked to capture the power of the waves and the interplay of strength and beauty in the sky. The lighthouse was the final element I added. It offered a sense of stability and permanence against the ever‑changing shapes of the clouds and the lake.
As I was completing the finishing touches, I realized there were two sources of light in the scene. The lighthouse provides earthly guidance, warning ships of the dangers of approaching land. The sun, though partially hidden behind clouds, shines through with a stronger, more ambiguous light — overpowering the lighthouse in several ways.
Everyone will see their own metaphors in this painting. My interpretation is meaningful to me, but however you experience it is yours to hold.
